When you find rodent droppings in your home, you might have one of two reactions: a) Run screaming from the room; or b) Back away slowly and convince yourself it was raisins (rats) or black sesame seeds (house mice).
As human as these reactions are, they are not going to solve the problem. There is a reason we freak out when rodents invade our homes: they are dirty (as in not potty trained), destructive, and a potential health hazard.
There is one more really compelling reason not to ignore a rodent infestation: they are incredibly fast and prolific breeders. If you don’t take care of the rats in your attic or walls as soon as you discover them, well, let me just quote Discover Magazine “ … a pair of brown rats can produce as many as 2,000 descendants in a year if left to breed unchecked.”
Here’s another fun fact about rats: their front teeth grow about 5 inches a year, so they have to wear them down by continuously gnawing on everything around them, including your electrical insulation (electrical outages and fire hazard) and thermal insulation (hot spots, cold spots, and higher utility bills). And it doesn’t stop there. They will gnaw on wood, concrete, and will absolutely love those cardboard boxes full of stuff you have stored in your attic.
Let’s not leave out that cute little house mouse. Not only will it leave a trail of urine and fecal droppings everywhere it goes, it will raid your pantry, (and trust me, they are not picky eaters) contaminating your food stores along the way. Then it will shred your napkins for its nest. They have even been known to gnaw and burrow their way into upholstered furniture to create a safe, cozy place to have their babies. And like the rat, they have lots and lots of babies.
If all of this doesn’t convince you to contact us at the first sign of a rodent infestation, consider this. The Black Plague may be long over, but rats and mice still carry the parasites (ticks and fleas) that carry disease, including Lyme disease and hantavirus.
So if you see some (ahem) raisins or black sesame seeds where no such thing should be, don’t scream or look the other way. Call us for a free inspection right away.
